ABOUT

Born 13 May 1973, Kouki Saitou is a freelance illustrator whose first Pokémon cards appeared in the Aquapolis expansion.

His work is built on realism and movement. He uses light and shadow to give scenes depth, and favours high and low camera angles to make a Pokémon feel like it is mid-action rather than posed — the result reads closer to an animation still than a portrait. He has cited Akira Toriyama and the films of Hayao Miyazaki as major influences.

Outside Pokémon he has drawn extensively for Japanese game tie-ins under the ¼ King! label, and maintains a fantasy world of his own called Kortlek.
