ABOUT
Born in 1960, Naoyo Kimura is one of the illustrators who defined the look of the game's earliest years. Her first cards — Seel, Zapdos and Graveler — appeared in the Japanese Expansion Sheet Series 2; English players met her work through the Wizards Black Star Promos Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres, released alongside The Power of One.
She is particularly associated with the Neo series and the Southern Islands promotional set.
Beyond cards she illustrated several Pokémon Tales picture books, including Come Out, Squirtle! and Fly On, Butterfree, and contributed to the 2023 Pokémon × Van Gogh collaboration, drawing Pikachu and bird Pokémon in the style of Van Gogh's paintings.
